BONNERS FERRY — Badger football remains undefeated after demolishing St. Maries 46-14 on Saturday, Oct. 1, for Senior Night.

The Badgers defense came out strong holding the Lumberjacks from gaining any momentum. In the last five minutes of the first quarter, the Badgers scored two touchdowns by Henry Willis and Teigan Banning. Blake Rice gained the extra point, sinking two field goals. The Badgers led 13-0 ending the first quarter.

By the half, the Badgers had a 26-point lead. The Lumberjacks remained scoreless.

St. Maries piled together in a bunch and were able to slip past the Badgers defense to finally score in the second half. However, the Badgers answered with Rice, running up the middle for another touchdown, making it 32-7.

In the fourth quarter the Lumberjacks scored again with nine minutes left in the game. The Badgers again answered. After a five-yard penalty on Bonners Ferry, at the Lumberjacks 15-yard line, Rice handed the ball off to Cleo Henslee who ran the sideline. After a block by Rice, Henslee ran the ball in for an 85-yard touchdown. After the extra point, Badgers lead 39-14.

Not to be outdone, the Badgers defense made sure the Lumberjacks’ offense didn’t stay on the field long as Dakota Heller knocked the ball away and Trey Bateman sacked the St. Maries quarterback for a loss of five yards.

Badgers took the win 46-14.

Bonners Ferry coach Travis Hinthorn said it was a great senior night, filled with a lot of energy.

“They stopped us at the start in the first possession. I thought we’d get the ball first and score, but they did [a good job of] stopping us,” he said.

He said the Badgers’ passing game went well and if they had time then they could get off a good pass.

When the Lumberjacks scored by piling players together and slipping past the Badger defense, Hinthorn said the technique is an old one and makes St. Maries instantly competitive.

He added it's hard to defend and simulate in practice. Also that it challenges the defense to see who has the ball.

Friday the Badgers play Kellogg away. Hinthorn predicted the Wildcats will air out every play and run more than St. Maries.

“It’ll be a whole different game, but that’s what keeps football fun,” he said.
