Mayor Staples visits local elementary school

BONNERS FERRY — Mayor Dick Staples spent time recently with Valley View Elementary third-graders, reading a book, sharing information about city government and answering the students’ questions.

“Third-graders spent the last few weeks learning about local government and were excited to meet Mayor Staples,” said Kelly Hoisngton, third-grade teacher at VVE. “They had many thoughtful and intriguing questions about his job, our city, and the jobs of the other members of our city government. It was an educational and engaging morning for everyone.”

“[The students] always have a question you don’t have an answer to,” Staples told the Herald.

Some of the many questions that have stumped the mayor is what was the first city in Idaho and what happens when a mayor race ends in a tie.

Staples said after some research he’s answered the students' questions. Franklin was the first city in Idaho and in the case of a tie in a mayoral race the winner is decided by a coin flip, he said.

Staples has also visited Mt. Hall Elementary. He visited Boundary County School District elementary schools in 2021 as well.
