BONNERS FERRY — Michelle Halter is the new principal at Valley View Elementary School and has just finished out her first week.

Halter was an elementary principal for 14 years, 11 of which were at Hayesville in Salem, Ore.

She said she has moved to Boundary County because she wanted to be in a smaller town and community where it is a great place for her kids and her grandson. She added that Boundary County values community and is a lovely place to be. She also values being near the border since her husband is half Canadian.

Halter said she chose to move to Boundary County School District partially because she’s always worked at Title 1 schools and that was something that attracted her to this position. Also, her family just purchased a home in Bonners Ferry and this has opened the opportunity for her to relocate her.

She said when she had the opportunity to interview at BCSD she fell in love with the people and believed the interview panel were a “great representation of the community” that she wanted to be a part of.

Before starting this week, she said she was most excited to meet the kids and staff. She said the team at VVE values the history and culture of the community. She admits she has a lot to learn, but feels privileged to be part of such a team.

She said she is excited to be a Badger and already has ordered Badger related stickers.

“I’m a sticker person,” she said.

She is also happy to have her family join her in her move to Bonners Ferry. She added that her grandson Finn is the joy of her heart.

“I’m thankful for this opportunity and am blessed to be joining this community,” she said. “It is a gift that’s been given to me.”
