BONNERS FERRY — Former Boundary County Commissioner Dan Dinning has been awarded the Idaho Distinguished Service Medal by the Idaho National Guard. The award was given in recognition of Dinning’s service to the county, Idaho Military Division, and the Idaho Office of Emergency Management.

“As chairman of the Boundary County Board of Commissioners [Dinning] was directly responsible for emergency flood fighting, wildland fire fighting coordination, response to severe storm power outages, and COVID pandemic response operations,” Major General Michael J. Garshak, Adjutant General of Idaho and the Commanding General of the Idaho National Guard wrote.

“Commissioner Dinning’s knowledge of disaster planning, preparedness, protection, response, and recovery is matched by very few. His leadership is directly attributable to the successful management of numerous disaster events in northern Idaho. The distinctive accomplishments of Dinning reflect great credit upon himself, the State of Idaho Military Division, the Idaho Office of Emergency Management, and Boundary County and the great state of Idaho.”

The award was approved in November 2022, but officials weren’t able to present the medal to Dinning before his term was up.
