This Week in History — 100 Years Ago: "C.D. Simonds announced yesterday that he decided to construct a second story on his brick building on the corner of Main and Bonner Streets. The brick work on the addition to the Simonds building on Bonner Street is completed."
C.D. Simonds bought the Gilt Top Cigar Store wooden building in 1916. In 1917, he began construction on a brick one-story building, which was completed in 1918. Simonds operated a drug store from the Main Street entrance, and Dr. White, a veterinary surgeon, opened an office in the rear portion of the building.
The 1923 second story contained 18 rooms. The rooms were furnished, and the second floor was annexed to the Commercial Hotel. Simonds sold the drug store to Percy Burnell in 1947. It became known as Burnell's Drug Store.
