SEASON OPENER: Volleyball works through new offense in first games
BONNERS FERRY — Fresh off a loss to Stillwater Christian, the Badgers are still working out their new offense, and fell to Kellogg on Tuesday in three sets, 25-23, 25-20 and 25-14.
The Badgers started strong in the first set keeping up with the Wildcats. Kellogg pulled away scoring 21-17 against the Badgers, but junior Helene Rae kept Bonners Ferry in the set scoring several kills and making it a two-point game at 21-23.
Freshman Taren Bateman earned a block, followed by another kill by Rae bringing the set down to 23-24. Kellogg earned the final point for a narrow victory.
On the scoreboard the other sets may not appear as close, but Badgers held their own and made big moves to stay in the game. Bonners Ferry stuck with Kellogg, but once the sets hit double digit scores, the Wildcats continued their momentum.
It was little mistakes that let Kellogg gain the advantage.
“We’re running a new offense this year, so the girls are still adjusting to that,” said Bonners Ferry head coach Cynthia Cummings.
There are new players on varsity and a lot of little things that the team will have to work out over the next couple of games, she said. The team remained positive and athletes are taking responsibility for actions on the court.
Cummings said during timeouts and after the game the players knew exactly what needed to be worked on. They understood where their own shortfalling were and how to move forward.
“Even though a loss we look at it as an opportunity to learn, moving forward this game is done and we're looking to Clark Fork on Wednesday,” She said.
The Badgers played at Clark Fork on Wednesday, Aug. 30. The game will be covered in the next edition of the Bonners Ferry Herald.
Rae, outside hitter, lead the Badgers in kills with 11, and serving aces with 3. Senior Sara Cummings had 1 block, and four digs.
Bateman led the team with 10 digs and 12 assists, followed by senior Savannah Rickter with 8 digs.
