Abubakari hits 1,000 points milestone
BONNERS FERRY — Bonners Ferry senior Asha Abubakari scored her 1,000th career point in the third basketball game of the season on Dec. 2.
Going into the game against Stillwater Christian, Abubakari needed nine points to break the 1,000-point threshold. In the third quarter off a fast break from fellow senior Markynn Pluid, Abubakari scored a left-handed lay-in earning her 10th point of the game and her 1,001 point.
Abubakari told the Herald that she didn’t realize she was set to break 1,000 points. She said she wouldn’t be where she is without her teammates.
“You can’t score without working with others,” she said, adding she is thankful for all the players she has played with and against over the years.
Bonners Ferry head coach Mike Cowley said although he has only had the pleasure of coaching Abubakari this season, she is one of the hardest-working players he has coached. She is always looking for ways to improve, Cowley said she is known to stay after practice to run additional conditioning or work shooting.
Last season, Abubakari averaged 17.1 points per game. So far, in the first three games of the season, she scored a total of 46 points.
The last Badger basketball player to attain this feat was Breaden Blackmore, a 2023 graduate, who broke the thousand-point threshold last December against Rogers High School.
In January 2021, Holly Ansley was the last Badger girls basketball player to reach the 1,000-point mark since Becky Lowther, a 2007 BFHS graduate.
