An open primary for Idaho makes sense
The Open Primaries Initiative, if enacted, would create unrestricted primaries where, regardless of your political viewpoint, any registered voter could vote for any candidate on the ballot. Republican, Democrat, independent, or Libertarian — all on the same ballot. We get to do that in the general elections in November; we should be able to do it in the primaries.
The primary would become an important clearing house to select the top four candidates for each office to move on to the general election, regardless of party. The well-attended general election then makes the final choice.
Petitions are being circulated. Find one and sign it. Help create a system that is truly representative of the voters. Volunteers will be taking signatures at the Pearl Theater, 7160 Ash St., Bonners Ferry, on Friday, Dec. 8, from noon to 5 p.m. and Monday, Dec. 11, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Stop by; we will put the coffee on.
