Rains, warm temps prompt flood watch

| December 7, 2023 1:00 AM

Rains and warmer weather prompted a flood watch that continues through today.

The flood watch, issued by the National Weather Service, impacts Boundary, Bonner, Benewah, Shoshone, Kootenai and Latah counties in North Idaho, as well as Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens and Whitman counties in Washington state.

"A moderately strong atmospheric river event beginning late Monday night and continuing into early Thursday (brought) milder temperatures with rising snow levels," NWS officials said. "The combination of melting snow at low to mid-elevations with moderate to heavy rain may lead to excessive runoff."

That excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations in the counties identified, according to NWS officials. That runoff could cause creeks and streams to rise out of their banks. Also, water could seep into basements and ponding of water over roads is possible. Steep terrain will also see an increased risk for rock slides.

In the press release, NWS officials said area residents should monitor forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
