ST. MARIES — Bonners Ferry boys basketball (16-1) defeated the 2A St. Maries Lumberjacks 56-46 in non-league play Feb. 3, with Badger sophomore Asher Williams scoring 19 points.

At the last matchup, Bonners Ferry beat St. Maries 74-68 at home and Greyson Sands scored 35 for the Lumberjacks. Sands was out due to injury at the Feb. 3 contest.

Incorrectly reported earlier that the Badger boys basketball team have never defeated the Jacks. Past season stats from Maxpreps.com reports the Badgers have not defeated the Lumberjacks since January 2010, when the Badgers won at home 49-47. Other games between Bonners and St. Maries show either a loss by the Badgers or no score reported.

Williams made two 3-pointers and hit 9 of 10 from the free-throw line for Bonners Ferry (16-1), ranked No. 2 in 3A. Charles Henslee and Trey Bateman added nine points each for the Badgers, who outrebounded St. Maries 34-21.

“That was a killer,” said St. Maries coach Bryan Chase. “It seemed like a lot of loose balls [and] 50/50 rebounds went their way. They hit the boards well, and we just had a hard time.”

Trace Wicks scored 12 points for St. Maries (9-5) and guard Jared Badgett had a team-high five rebounds.

Bonners broke from a 24-all halftime tie by scoring the first 10 points of the third quarter.

“Bonners took at least five charges,” Chase said. “Just those extra little possessions are the difference between winning and losing.”

Bonners Ferry returns to action on Friday at Kellogg.
