Volleyball raises over $4,000 at Volley for a Cure
BONNERS FERRY — The 2022 “Volley for a Cure” fundraiser raised $4,516.36 for the Bonners Ferry Women's Cancer Group. The event was presented by the Bonners Ferry High School volleyball program.
The proceeds were raised by gate entry fees to the “Volley For a Cure” game and a silent auction.
The Bonners Ferry Women’s Cancer Support Group was organized nearly 30 years ago by a group of women who had one thing in common — breast cancer. They saw a need to get together for moral support during a very difficult time.
In the beginning it was realized that one of the disadvantages of living in Boundary County was the expense of traveling to Coeur d'Alene or Spokane for treatments, officials said. Thus, the idea of gas cards was created. It may seem like a small thing, but organizers said a gas card is really more than that. It lets someone who is dealing with a cancer diagnosis that someone cares.
At this time the support group has remained a women’s group, but officials said their goal is to give support to anyone who is affected by cancer. The group depends entirely on donations and 100% of their donations go for gas cards.
In 2021, the organization gave $5,000 for gas cards. So far this year they have given more than $3,000 to help with travel expenses.
