Kootenai River Run sees 169 participants

A total of 169 participants crossed the finish line at the Kootenai River Run/Walk on Saturday, July 22.

The event, part of the Kootenai River Days, raises funds for scholarships for Bonners Ferry High School scholar-athletes who have been active in cross country or track. This year’s scholarship recipients are Ceci Roemer and Jaden Byars. Their awards are $1,000 apiece.

The Kootenai River Run/Walk, a local favorite since 1975, starts and ends at the Boundary County Fairgrounds. Participants commented that they were happy to be running in cooler morning temperatures, with an 8 a.m. start time. Following the run, many participants headed to downtown Bonners Ferry for the Farmer’s Market, corn hole tournament, Crazy Days, sidewalk art, food vendors, and more.

The 5K saw 139 finishers, while the 10K had 30. Ribbons went to the top three finishers in each age group. Overall race winners received handmade trophy plaques. Drawings for door prizes — gift cards, haircuts, massages, a glamping weekend getaway, and the like — gave participants multiple chances to win. Nevaeh Elliston won the grand prize drawing, a $125 gift certificate for the Sportsman Ski Haus in Coeur d’Alene.

On the course, Connor Alexander won the men’s 5K with 17:34. Camille Ussher won the women’s 5K with 22:07. In the 10K, Alexander Fry won the men’s race with 39:45. Abigail Gorton won the women’s 10K with 45:22. Alexander, Gorton and Ussher are former Badger cross country and track athletes and previous scholarship recipients.

Participants were cheered along the course by live musicians — Scott Stover, Joe Bovy, Hobart Yocum, and the No Boundaries band — and performers Azule Fire and Friends Belly Dancers. They were cooled by getting sprayed and soaked by the Rowdy Restorium Renegades.

Event organizers would like to thank this year’s sponsors, Shelman Realty and Idaho Forest Group. They also would like to thank local business contributors Super 1 (fruit), Brenda Woodward (embroidery), Far North Logo (T-shirts), Boundary County 4-H (water stations), Mountain West Bank (tools and cup), Sportsman and Ski Haus Coeur d’Alene (gift certificates), Keep In Touch Massage (massage and reflexology), Far North Outfitters (gift cards), Avyeon Spa (massages and health drink mixes), Under the Sun (beach kit), Hank Willis D.D.S. (Yeti drinking cup), Iron Mike’s (shirts and other gifts), Riverside Auto (gift card and other prizes), Mugsy’s (gift cards), Idaho Custom Wreaths (wreath), Shear Shack (haircuts), Bonners Ferry Craft Brews (Glamping getaway), Mountain Mike’s (athlete’s recovery kit), Cloud Eleven Mountain Farm (gift cards), North Idaho Beauty Bar (insulated cup), and Carl Kerttu (handmade trophies).

“I always appreciate that the committee’s two greatest objectives are to support local athletes with scholarships and to provide the community and other participants with a quality fun run experience,” said Bonners Ferry High School cross country coach Tyler Warner. “We always enjoy seeing our regular participants, but also enjoy how we always seem to get new faces who compliment us on how much they enjoy the experience.”
