BONNERS FERRY — A local couple received a special thanks from a veteran after opening their property to veterans for turkey hunting.

Mike Hill of Florida, who served on active duty during the Vietnam era, said he was touched by the generosity of Paul and Charlene Wells and asked local veterans officials to present them with a commemorable 2023 Wounded Warrior Project coin token medallion.

In the letter, Hill wrote that when he first joined the military, he was told not to wear his uniform when on post because he would be spat upon and cursed by many of those they were sworn to protect.

“A lot has changed in the intervening years,” he said. “Most folks are more appreciated now, or at least they keep their thoughts to themselves. However, only a few go the extra mile and open up their property for an old vet to hunt on.”

He said Paul and Charlene Wells are among that special group of patriots who will never forget “those of us who have had the honor to serve our great country.”

Veterans Affairs Officer Ronald W. Self read the letter and American Legion Post 55 Commander Scott Cameron presented the medallion.
