Third graders receive free swim lessons
BONNERS FERRY — Boundary County School District third graders received free swim lessons at the Litehouse YMCA in Sandpoint thanks to the annual Long Bridge Swim.
The students were bused to Sandpoint on three different days for the lessons.
In addition, the staff is providing other activities teaching positive character traits, athletic skills, team building skills, and more.
“Many of our students could swim while others could not,” Shelly Hoisington, Valley View Elementary third-grade teacher, told the Herald.
“After just two lessons those who could not swim have made huge progress. Students were divided into small groups based on their swimming abilities. Once in their groups, they were instructed as needed. All of the students have made growth and it has been amazing and rewarding to witness,” she said.
In class, students learn about water safety and how they can keep themselves and others safe near or in water.
