Celebrate Independence Day and the days surrounding it safely

The Fourth of July travel period comes amid the 100 Deadliest Days on Idaho roads – the summer days between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends when there is an increase in fatal crashes. According to the Idaho Transportation Department preliminary data, in the last 31 days, at least 19 people have been killed in crashes in Idaho.

This Independence Day Boundary County Sheriff’s Office will be teaming up with the ITD’s Office of Highway Safety to curb impaired driving. June 30 through July 9, law enforcement agencies across the state will dedicate resources to stop drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

“If you have fireworks make sure that they are legal and used safely, we sure don’t want to see property damage, someone getting injured or more fires this year,” Boundary County Sheriff Dave Kramer said. “Even though you may be able to purchase certain fireworks at different locations, they may not be legal to possess or use.”

“On the safety subject, with the warm weather many of you may be heading to the river or lakes to enjoy time off around the fourth. The Kootenai River is still cold and has some strong currents, we encourage you to wear life jackets when out on the water especially if you are in a kayak, canoe or jet ski. Young children are required to have a life jacket on. If you tip over, the current can separate you from your watercraft,” he said.
