Waterways safety reminder from BCSO
BONNERS FERRY — The Boundary County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone prepping for the waterways about safety.
“The water is running slower than usual but there is still debris moving down the tributaries. The weather is improving rapidly and the sun is out, but the water is still cold,” said BCSO Sheriff Dave Kramer.
The Boundary County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division with the help of the Idaho Parks and Recreation will be conducting Boat Safety Classes in May.
“As always, we want to relay the 1:10:1 rule,” Kramer said. “If you were to find yourself in the cold water, you have one minute to catch your breath and get your breathing under control. DON’T PANIC. You will have 10 minutes of meaningful movement or motor skills, which you need to swim. DON’T PANIC. You will then have up to one hour before you can be incapacitated with hypothermia.”
BCSO officials added that wearing a life jacket will significantly increase your success in getting out of the water and saving your life.
The Boundary County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division with the help of the Idaho Parks and Recreation will be conducting Boat Safety Classes at the Waterways Building located at 6821 Riverside St. in Bonners Ferry. Classes will be held May 6, 13 and 20 starting at 8 a.m. and going to 2 p.m.
Coffee is provided and participants are encouraged to bring lunch.
