KVRC members compete at George Conner Rifle Match

| May 18, 2023 1:00 AM

On Saturday, May 6, four members of the Kootenai Valley Rifle Club traveled to Spokane to participate in the 52nd annual George Conner Rifle Match.

This match is held on the outdoor range at the Spokane Rifle Club. Using .22 small-bore, single-shot rifles, the course of fire is a Dewar Course, consisting of 20 shots prone at 100 yards and 20 shots prone at 50 yards. Then the shooters continue to shoot a position match at 50 meters, shooting 20 shots in the prone, standing, and kneeling positions.

Nineteen juniors (under 21 years old and using iron sites) and 4 seniors (over 20 years old and using scopes) would take on the challenge. Lucky for the participants the weather did not match the local weather and the day was overcast with little wind. No rain to speak of.

Paige Sartell, shooting in the Sharpshooter class, improved her score by over 90 points from the previous year and moved up from Marksman. She took 2nd place in the Dewar course and 3rd place overall in her class.

Salix Harris and Kyalynn Comer were both in the expert class. Harris improved by over 30 points and moved up a class. She took second place in the Dewar course and second place in the expert class. Comer only shot in the prone class last year, so she made quite the jump this year. Proving herself a good prone shooter, she placed third in the Dewar course and fourth in the expert class.

Kathy Konek, shooting in the senior class, was second in the Dewar course of fire.

The outdoor season has just begun for these shooters. Other matches will be held in Spokane, Wenatchee, and Missoula.
