American Legion mural project to honor veterans

BONNERS FERRY — The American Legion Post 55 is working to add a mural honoring veterans on the outside of the Veterans of Foreign War and Veterans Alliance building in Bonners Ferry.

Michelle Walker, American Legion member and project manager, said the project will wrap around the northern corner of the building and be visible from U.S. 95. Due to the building’s awnings, upkeep for the mural should be minimal.

She hopes that by having the mural outside the building, more people will know about the services offered by the VFW and other veteran organizations housed at the building.

Dawn Wagner, Boundary County Middle School art teacher, is designing the mural. Past works include the mural behind Mugsy’s Bar and Grill.

The project is expected to start in the spring with the hopes that local students will be involved in painting alongside local veterans.

Walker said the American Legion and Veterans Alliance aims to bring the community and veterans together. The mural is another way to form connections with the youths and those that have served.

The American Legion Post 55 is still working on designs for the mural. The exterior's cinder-block wall will not be painted on directly; rather a frame will be built and the mural will be painted on a new surface in order to extend its life. 

Lighting may be added to light the mural as well.

The mural is another opportunity for the Legion and other veteran organizations to work with the younger generations, veterans and the community as a whole, Walker said.

Walker hopes that this mural will encourage other nonprofits to commission murals in order to beautify the town and allow those passing by to see what services are available.

Donations to the mural have been given by Wayne Garrigan from Community Thrift Store and Boundary County.
