This Week in History — 100 Years Ago: "A deal was closed last Thursday whereby the Bonner Bakery was sold by Leo Buteau to John Chervenell of Northport, Wash. Mr. Chervenell has had 22 years experience as a baker and has been in business at Northport for five years. He plans to add new equipment to Bonner Bakery, including an electric oven."
Korff & Co. was an Amsterdam cocoa and chocolate factory, founded in 1811 by Frederick Korff, a spice merchant. One of the first companies to make chocolate, it used a windmill to grind the cocoa beans.
This 25-pound cocoa keg was shipped to Bonner Bakery (unknown year). Can you imagine what tasty treats Chervenell baked with the cocoa? The wooden keg is in the Boundary County Museum collection.
