100 Years Ago

A deal was closed last Thursday whereby the Bonner Bakery was sold by Leo Buteau to John Chervenell of Northport, Wash. Mr. Chervenell has had 22 years experience as a baker and has been in business at Northport for five years. He plans to add new equipment to Bonner Bakery, including an electric oven.

Definite plans have been made within the past week for the construction of three new brick business blocks on Main Street at a cost of approximately $80,000. One block will be constructed at once and the other two will be constructed early next spring. Martin Estlund has a crew of men at work tearing down the old Amazon Theatre building.

W.L. Kinnear has plated his 40 acre tract on the south bench and is offering it for sale in acre tracts.

Panhandle Snowmobile Club No.45 spokesman Ernie Giezelmann reports he met with officials of the U.S. Forest Service yesterday morning and agreed that his organization would abide by a suggestion that there will be no snowmobiling in the Boundary Creek, Blue Joe, and West Fork of Smith Creek areas this winter. The club realizes the importance of cooperating in saving the habitat of this diminishing band of Mountain Caribou- the only band known to inhabit the continental U.S.

It started raining Saturday and it rained all day. The Badgers slipped, slid and fought hard for the North Idaho Championship, but a strong Orofino team left the muddy field with the title with a score of 20-0.

Kathy Galloway, BFHS senior, has been cited by the National Council of Teachers of English as a winner of 1973 NCTE Achievement Award in writing. Kathy is co-editor of The Badger at BFHS.

Boundary County’s number of unemployed for October was higher than it’s been in nearly 7 years. The county’s unemployment rate also was the fourth highest among Idaho’s 44 counties. In October, 10.8% of the local workforce was without a job.

More than 200 items, including six VIP tickets to the Washington State University versus University of Washington  sold during the 11th annual Mt. Hall Auction on Saturday, Nov.15. Money raised from the auction, which begins at noon at the school, will be split between all the county schools. 

City Council this year has entered an agreement with Idaho Transportation Department to place the dirty snow on property between the Kootenai River Inn, Highway 95, and Arizona Street.
