100 Years Ago

Over two hundred of the friends of Mr. and Mrs. O.C. Wilson attended the funeral services for their son, “Jimmie,” held at the Union Church Sunday afternoon at two o’clock. James McKenzie Wilson was born in Bonners Ferry on November 18, 1919. He died Friday evening, November 16, from bronchial pneumonia.

While hunting in the mountains near Snyder last Saturday afternoon, Joe Siek, blacksmith at the Meeker Machine Shop, was accidently shot in the left arm by John Stine, a well known resident of the Snyder district. The wound was inflicted with a steel jacket bullet from a .35 Remington rifle and the bone between the shoulder and the elbow was broken and splintered.

The Boyd Spring Store at Meadow Creek was broken into Monday night, the till robbed of some small change and some small merchandise was stolen. The thief made an attempt to open the safe in the post office department in the rear of the store.

A wide range of suggestions were rendered and discussed by a participating audience of over 75 person at an organizational meeting Monday night directed toward planning a public recreation center for Boundary County. The open-ended public gathering at the Legion Hall was moderated by Dr. Jefrey Arlen who fielded questions, offered proposals, and listened to discussion between members of the audience. Ideas tossed around included either establishing an indoor swimming pool, steam room, tennis courts, handball courts, exercise and game rooms or a combination of these.

Basketball Coach Dick Hollenbeck said this week that he is optimistic and expects improvements over last season when the Badgers won nine and lost eleven games. A good year is also expected for the Junior Varsity team, coached by Don Trueblood, and for the freshman coached by Dave Gray.

Bonners Ferry High School Girls Basketball team won the Silver Valley Tournament this weekend, defeating Mullan 73-6 on Friday and Kellogg 55-22 on Saturday. A Bonners Ferry High School graduate, wrestling at a higher weight class this year, Adam Hall of Boise State has opened the season winning two dual meets.

Avid bowler Jenny Liermann hasn’t bowled since A.J. Lanes in Bonners Ferry flooded. The Naples mother of three couldn’t be happier now that the bowling alley has reopened. A grand re-opening is planned for Thanksgiving weekend.

The Mt. Hall Auction raised $29,000 before expenses for local schools and attracted more than 300 people.
