Hundreds flock to 15th annual Turkey Trot
BONNERS FERRY — Roughly 115,500 calories were burned before Thanksgiving feasts were enjoyed — at least for those who came out for the 15th annual Bonners Ferry Turkey Trot.
A whopping 388 runners came out to run or walk the 5K course, some even ran the 10K, despite the chill and cloudy skies. This year, a truckload of food donations were given to the local food bank, as part of admission to the run.
“Tom the Turkey” again returned to spice up the race. Each year a runner is chosen to play “Tom,” who earns a head start to the 10K race and carries a turkey baster. Any runner who passes “Tom” collects the turkey baster and becomes “Tom.” The runner who crosses the finish line with the turkey baster in hand wins a turkey.
This year, Bonners Ferry High School cross country runner Jack Woods ran as “Tom.”
This year’s winner was Mason Stevens, of Philomath, Ore., a high school cross country runner who was visiting family.
Ten pumpkin pies were eaten, including 10 gallons of hot cocoa, five gallons of coffee, four bags of mini marshmallows, for one incredible case.
Race organizer Carolyn Birrell thanked the 11 volunteers and Adam Reeves’ Forerunner Entertainment for the music.
The many prizes were donated by generous merchants and service providers.
