Community rallies to help local musician
BONNERS FERRY — The community is rallying behind a local musician who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
Mike "Big Dog" Poulin was diagnosed with inoperable stage 3 lung cancer in late August. He has since completed five weeks of chemotherapy and radiation and has another several weeks of treatment left.
Among the efforts to help Poulin is a chili and cornbread cookout fundraiser from 3-9 p.m. Saturday at the Northwoods Tavern and Grill, 461 Deep Creek Loop, Naples.
The fundraiser will feature good food, good fun, and a chance to show support for the father, brother and partner as he fights cancer, organizers said. There are lots of donations for the live auction and there is sure to be lots of good chili and cornbread featured at the cookout.
For those who are not able to make it, cash donations are accepted through Zelle, a digital payments network.
In addition, a campaign has been launched on GoFundMe, a crowdfunding platform where people raise money for everything from illnesses to accidents and more.
"He’s a father, brother, friend, partner, and co-worker … and right now he needs your help," said Tammy Poulin, organizer of the campaign for Mike Poulin. "Whether it’s a prayer, a well-wish or donating to the fundraiser, it is all deeply appreciated."
Because Mike is self-employed, he has no income since he has stopped working due to treatments. Proceeds will help the Bonners Ferry resident cover living expenses and rent. It also will go to pay for gas for daily trips from Bonners Ferry to Coeur d'Alene for chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
"This will allow Mike to rest and recover so he can get back to doing what he does best work, play music and helping others," Tammy Poulin said on the GoFundMe page.
So far the campaign has raised about $2,580 of its $6,000 goal. All donations are appreciated and will allow Mike to focus on his treatment and getting better, she said.
"Please continue to keep Mike in your daily prayers," Tammy Poulin said. "His energy is slowing down and he is resting as much as he is able. For a man who is used to working all the time he is wishing he felt better to be back to normal."
Part of the music scene in Boundary and Bonner counties for almost three decades, Mike Poulin has played with many of the region's bands.
