SPIRIT LAKE — Bonners Ferry freshman Taren Bateman had 21 kills, four aces and 21 digs, as Badger volleyball bested the 3A Timberlake Tigers (3-11), and only league opponent, in best of five sets, 25-23, 20-25, 25-27, 25-18, 15-6.

Helene Rae had 13 kills, one block and 22 diggs; Rulie Kimball had three aces and 13 assists, Aspen Hill had three solo blocks and one ace; Ellie Falck had 31 assists, 14 diggs and two kills.

Bonners Ferry (8-8, 1-0) hosts Timberlake this Thursday, with a chance to wrap up the top seed to the best-of-3 3A District 1 playoff versus Timberlake in a couple of weeks.

The Badgers were district champs last year and defeated the Tigers in every set of the season. They could relive history this year and revisit the state contest.

Last year at state, the No. 6 seed Badgers played third-seed Weiser and fell in three sets; 22-25, 14-25, 14-25.

Bonners Ferry then played the No. 7 seed Buhl, which won 3-1. The Badgers were right with Buhl in the first and fourth sets, but ultimately fell to the Wolverines; 24-26, 15-25, 25-23, 20-25.
