Badger XC earns PRs at Farragut
FARRAGUT — Bonners Ferry cross country had a sneak preview of the district course on Sept. 9 as they took part in the Timberlake Farragut Invitational Farragut State Park, with many Badgers earning PRs.
“We're continuing to improve, but this early in the season we're still focused on the long-term goal of qualifying for state, which just so happened to be on this course,” said Bonners Ferry head coach Tyler Warner. “I think the team learned a lot about how the course runs, particularly the hills, and how much harder it is to try to push on hills the second time around on the two-loop course.”
A few runners are working through injuries, and others are still working on being eligible by reaching 10 practices, making the Badgers short of runners for a girls team and unable to participate in team rankings.
For the girls, one runner is working on eligibility and two others are working through injuries, Warner said.
“Likewise, on the boys side, we should be adding a guy this Saturday once he gets his practices in,” he said.
“As far as our performance goes, Piper Banning had a big PR [new personal record]. We had a tough week of practice with track workouts and hill repeats, but in spite of that, she still found reasons to persevere and had a great day on a tough course. She’ll likely only get stronger as the season progresses,” Warner said.
Banning improved her time by nearly 35 seconds from the Libby Invite, the season opener.
Newcomer Jackson Fiedler earned a PR of around 20 seconds as compared to the season opener.
“He's starting to learn how to push himself and is getting more fit as we progress. We had several course records as well, and folks who were knocking on the door of PRs or course records,” he said.
Badger cross country is hosting a race at home on Saturday at 9 a.m. for the girls at 9:40 a.m. The race will start and finish in Kenny Mendenhall Stadium with the majority of the course going out onto the Badger Trail behind the high school.
The trail was recently upgraded thanks to the High Five Grant that the cross country team received a few years ago.
