100 Years Ago

Dr. D.C. Hardy, who for the past four years has been practicing dentistry at Fairbanks, Alaska, has decided to locate in Bonners Ferry and has leased offices in the First State Building.

G.W. Duncan, assistant engineer of the U.S. Forestry Service arrived here yesterday and will begin at once the construction of approximately five miles of road on Skin Creek and connection with the road to Meadow Creek on the west side of the Moyie River.

After being held up through a great part of the summer by high water in the Moyie River, the electric power plant and dam of the Cynide Gold Mining Company at Eileen is now being rushed to completion. The coffer dam was completed about three weeks ago and the waters of the Moyie are now running through a flume, leaving the river bed free for preliminary work on the new dam. It is expected the dam will be completed within a few weeks.

Etta Mae Schnuerle added one more memorable trophy to an impressive collection last Saturday morning at about 9 a.m. when she bagged an estimated 1,000-pound moose on Deer Creek Road.

Steve Tanner, a former kicking star for the Bonners Ferry Badgers, drilled eight extra points and two 41-yard field goals in the University of Texas- El Paso Saturday. Steve’s 14 points total was second only in-game scoring to the Vandal’s Marshal Brantley, who had three touchdowns.

A spokesman for the Boundary County Library Board announced that the sum of $4,000 had been received from the commissioners toward the purchase of the building site for the new library.

Callie Gahr possesses the tools to maintain Bonners Ferry’s 30 by 50-foot signature American flag — experience and an industrial sewing machine. The owner of Callie’s Niche quilt shop is currently repairing the downtown flag damage during the July 10 windstorm that ripped through Boundary County.

A Bonners Ferry boy is returning home for the Idaho premiere of his backcountry, extreme snowmobile film. Mark Mesenbrink appears in Thunderstruck 7, which will be shown at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Rex Theater in Bonners Ferry. Snowmobile riding has always been a hobby for Mesenbrink, whose late father, Herman, owned a dealership in Moyie Springs, and whose, mother, Carol, owns the Rex.

Mike Klaus, engineer for the city of Bonners Ferry, is resigning from the full-time position to do consulting work. Employed by the city since March 2006, Klaus has been very involved with the $4.5 million upgrades and improvements to the water system.
