BONNERS FERRY — The American Legion Post 55 aims to put a mural outside the Veterans Alliance building to honor all veterans and military branches.

At the Sept. 14 regular American Legion meeting, Wayne Garrigan from Community Thrift Store presented the Legion a $200 donation for the mural project.

Michelle Walker, American Legion member and project manager, said the project will wrap around the northern corner of the building and will be visible from U.S. 95. Due to the building’s awnings, upkeep for the mural is expected to be minimal.

Dawn Wagner, Boundary County Middle School art teacher, will be designing the mural. Her past work includes the mural behind Mugsy’s Bar and Grill.

The mural project is projected to start in spring and students will be involved in painting.

Veterans will come alongside the students in painting the mural, Walker said, adding the American Legion and Veterans Alliance aims to bring the community and veterans together. The mural is another way to form connections with the youths and those that have served.

The mural is another opportunity for the Legion and other veteran organizations to work with the younger generations, veterans and the community as a whole, Walker said.

Walker hopes that this mural will encourage other nonprofits to commission murals in order to beautify the town and allow those passing by to see what services are available.

At this time $1,700 has been raised for the mural from the city of Bonners Ferry and other donors.
