BONNERS FERRY — The 1A South Central Connell (Wash.) Eagles (1-2) scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, setting the pace for the game against the Bonners Ferry Badgers (1-3) on Friday, Sept. 15.

Badger football had several opportunities to come back from the first quarter, with quarterback Brody Rice looking deep for running back/tight end Trey Bateman. In the sixth minute of the game, in answer to the Eagles’ first touchdown, Rice connected with Bateman, who rolled into the endzone on third and long. However, the Badger defense was called for holding and a 10-yard penalty was issued instead.

A few minutes later, an interception by the Eagles in the Badger red zone and another quick touchdown took the air out of the Badgers, making the score 13-0, and then 21-0.

The Badgers made advances on offense, but penalties, six fumbles and defensive errors plagued the hometeam from getting onto the scoreboard. The Badgers successfully blocked two field goals in the second half.

Connell won 52-0.

Bonners Ferry head coach Danny Swift said Dakota Heller played a strong game on offense and defense as halfback and linebacker.

“Matt Treutelaar ran the ball hard and also was a solid contributor on defense with a strip sack in the second half,” Swift said.

He commended the JV team and its win over Connell. In that game, Alex Stolley had three interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. Jacob Solt had a rushing touchdown, Keenan Mass had a receiving touchdown and Gio Faraoni had a touchdown catch.

“Strong offensive line player was an important factor,” Swift said in regards to the JV team’s victory.

Badger football (1-3) plays away against East Valley Knight (0-3) from the 2A/3A/4A Greater Spokane League on Friday. Last year, the Badgers defeated the Knights 46-6.
