Mayor resignation, unopposed candidates leads to no Nov. election
MOYIE SPRINGS — Mayor Steve Economu resigned on Tuesday, due to health issues, and city council president Geoff Hollenbeck was sworn in as mayor of Moyie Springs.
The city of Moyie Springs’ city council race was the only contested race in the county, with incumbents Terry Johnson and Deborah Rauth vying to retain their seats and challenger Patrick Stevens.
With Hollenbeck being named mayor, a vacancy for the city council seat opened. Stevens was then sworn in to fill the vacancy, resulting in the two open city council seats not being contested and resulting in Johnson and Rauth retaining their seats on council.
A lack of candidates has resulted in unopposed races across Boundary County. Per Idaho Code, since the candidates are not opposed, they receive the position. Therefore there will not be any elections in November.
Typically before elections the Bonners Ferry Herald will run a candidate questionnaire special section in October. Instead the special section will feature profiles and question and answer sections for the newly appointed officials.
