Badgers beat Sandpoint first time in 8 years

BONNERS FERRY — Badger baseball (4-9) beats Sandpoint (3-4)  for the first time since 2016, after falling in Game 1 on Thursday March 29 at Badger Field.

In Game 1, Sandpoint scored three runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach, eventually winning 5-1 after Dallen Williams retired the side in the final frame. The sophomore went seven innings on the mound, giving up just two hits and no earned runs while striking out five batters.

Sophomore Soren Caprio and junior Drew Lehman both had RBI singles and two hits each in the win. Sophomores Mason Little and Sage Medeiros also put together multi-hit efforts to help lift the Bulldogs to victory.

In Game 2, the Bulldogs got on the board early, leading 6-0 after three innings thanks to a second inning rally where both Williams and Lehman hit RBI singles.

In the fifth, Sandpoint Jacob Hanseh hit three Badger batters, filling the bases. Sophomore Jack Woods took advantage with two RBIs, as the Badgers then trailed 6-5. After a balk by Sandpoint, Woods cleared home plate, tying the game.

The Badges added one more run in the sixth to take the lead, 7-6. Thomas Bateman pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning to give the Badgers the victory. Bateman pitched three innings in relief and gave up just one lone hit.

"It's feels good to beat a 4A school and our next door neighbor," Bonners Ferry head coach Tom Turpin said on beating Sandpoint for the first time since 2016. "We played good all day. The first game was close and we let it slip away. Being down 6-0 and the boys coming back was huge."

"The team did well, we made mistakes in the first game, but we grew into that second game," he said. "The season is not a sprint, it's a marathon. We just gotta take one step at a time and this is a huge step. We've had a losing streak, so this was big to break that."

Thomas Bateman had a double and went two for three at the plate. Trey Bateman went three for four, Jesse Fess went two for two.

In Game 2 pitcher Jack Woods faced 22 batters and Thomas Bateman faced 10.

The Badgers last beat the Bulldogs 3-1 in 2016.
