BONNERS FERRY — Dave Schuman, who is running for Boundary County sheriff, retired from the Boundary County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, April 1.

Schuman said that while he was retiring, he is continuing his candidacy for the sheriff’s post.

In deciding to retire, Schuman said the move was prompted by dissatisfaction with how BCSO handles personnel matters, particularly his. The “delay of action” shows an “agenda,” he said, adding he is limited in what he can say.

Schuman has been on administrative leave for several weeks due to a pending investigation of POST standards.

“I’ve never been the type to sponge off the county or state,” he said, adding it is a waste for him to remain on leave for an extended time, rather than being allowed to be out on patrol.

He said he did not retire to better focus on his campaign, but that retirement does allow him that opportunity. As an employee running for an elected position, especially when it is that of his supervisor, is difficult, Schuman said.

Schuman was eligible for retirement and completed the process with the Public Employee Retirement System of Idaho.
