VanGesen has experience needed for post
What qualifications do I feel are necessary for the next Boundary County sheriff?
I am a resident of Boundary County, have worked in law enforcement for the past 30 years and have held almost every position from the bottom to the top. A strong background in management and commander experience are just a few strengths necessary to achieve success as a sheriff. An outside candidate is important for a smaller agency as it encourages less corruption, better morale within the department and brings in outside experience.
A sheriff must have extensive investigative experience in violent crimes, sexual assaults, and internal affairs. SWAT and narcotics experience is imperative to have. They must be honest and forward-thinking. Successful sheriffs create one-, three- and five-year plans for their departments to achieve up-to-date training, full staffing levels, and additional funds to expand their budget. Creating strong relationships with surrounding agencies is very important to create multi-agency assistance and to obtain important resources. The ability and knowledge to apply for state and federal grants should be a priority as well as the experience of managing a budget laid out by the county.
I have asked myself, who has the most executive and command experience? Would I want this person to oversee serious crimes against my family, neighbors, and community? Who will hold his deputies accountable and bring positive change? I would argue that only one of these three candidates meets the qualifications, and my vote will be for Jon VanGesen.
