COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Davis wins third CCC decathlon championship

Sandpoint alumni TJ Davis won seven out of 10 events, setting three new conference records in the process, en route to his third men’s decathlon title at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Multi-Event Championships held Apr. 18-19 at Eastern Oregon University. Davis’ score of 6,996 points currently ranks him as the No.1 NAIA decathlete in the nation.
Davis set new records and finished first in the 110 hurdles (14.60), 1500 (4:43.09), and the discus (126-10). Davis also finished first in the 100 (11.29), 400 (50.14), shot put (43-10), and the high jump (5-11 ¼). He finished second in the long jump (21-6 ¼), pole vault (12-9 ½) and the javelin throw (159-6).
For his efforts, Davis was named the Rize Laboratory Athlete of the Week by the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
The Mountaineers are back in action April 26-27 at the Oregon State University High Performance Meet.
Rusty Lee, Eastern Washington University Track & Field
2023 Sandpoint graduate Rusty Lee finished third in the 400 hurdles (55.52) at the Cougar Classic Invitational hosted by Washington State University this past Saturday.
The Eagles will compete next at the Oregon State University High Performance Meet.
Jantzen Lucas, Lewis-Clark State College Baseball
The Priest River native picked up his third win of the season on Sunday over the University of British Columbia. The hard-throwing southpaw threw three innings, giving up four hits, no runs and one walk while striking out six batters to help propel the Warriors to their 12th straight win. Over 16 innings of work this season, he now holds a 2.25 ERA and has 24 strikeouts compared to just five walks.
Lewis-Clark State (31-9) will play host Bushnell for four games between April 27-28.
Teagun Holycross, Montana University Track & Field
Priest River’s Tegaun Holycross finished first out of 16 runners in the 100 (10.71) and third out of 16 in the 200 (22.07) at the Montana Open held April 19-20 at the University of Montana.
The Griz will return to action April 26-27 at the Bengal Invitational hosted by Idaho State University.
Connor Alexander, Lewis-Clark State College Track & Field
Bonners Ferry’s Connor Alexander won the 5000 (15:54.64) at the Cougar Classic Invitational this past weekend. He also set a new personal best in the 1500 (4:04.64) to finish fourth at the Whitworth Twilight meet held Thursday, April 11.
Lewis-Clark State will compete next at the Oregon University Twilight meet on Friday, May 3.
Cody Newhart, Lackawanna College Baseball
Sandpoint’s Cody Newhart hit his first collegiate home run during a 11-8 win over Monroe County Community College this past Tuesday. Newhart, who hit the two-run home run during a pinch hit in the top of the seventh, extended the Falcons’ lead to 9-6 with the blast.
Lackawanna College (20-21) will host Northampton County Community College on Tuesday.
