This past Thursday, April 18, the Bonners Ferry High School gym was filled with laughter as spectators cheered for students and teachers as they mounted their noble steeds for the donkey basketball game.

While the players were the ones competing, the power was really in the donkey’s hand — or hooves. Which left it entirely up to chance who would come out the victor in each round. The crowd chanted their encouragement throughout the games as players vaulted off their mounts to grab the ball and then had to fumble their way back into the saddle.

Applause echoed with every basket made, but even when the basket was missed, both the audience and the players were smiling and laughing.

Donkey basketball is a fundraiser hosted by the Bonners Ferry Future Farmers of America and proceeds are donated to Boundary County Victim Services.

“I would like to thank everyone who came out to the event and to all the FFA students who put it on,” said Gabby Johnson, FFA instructor.
