State Wrestling: Girls take third, five Badgers place

BOYS

POCATELLO — Thirteen Badger boys wrestling qualified for state, with freshman heavyweight Taylor Dodd taking fourth. 

Dodd (33-13) won the first round by fall at 5:50 over Finnigan Moon (29-18) of McCall-Donnelly. In the second round, he won by fall over Joel Zamora of Fruitland. In the semi-finals, Dodd faced against the No. 1 seed, holding on for nearly five minutes before losing by fall. 

Entering the consolation bracket, Dodd again faced Moon, who had gone on to win his next three matches. Dodd got to work and won by a 5-1 decision, advanced to the third and fourth-placing match. Neilson Glasco of South Fremont won by fall at 29 seconds, taking third and Dodd taking fourth place. 

The Badgers placed 13th out of 18 teams.

GIRLS

POCATELLO — Bonners Ferry girls wrestling finished third at the Idaho All Girls wrestling state championship, with senior Aubrey Wells (165) and freshman Eva Willis (185) taking second place. 

Aubrey Wells (165, 19-8) in the opening round won by fall over No 1 seed Nampa’s Kyra Richards (20-3). Then in the quarterfinals, she faced Sandpoint's Sylvia Becker reenacting the District I-II championship match. Wells won by fall at 3:28, then won by a 10-6 decision over Paige Cantell of Eagle. 

In the championship, Wells fell to Riana Walter of Canyon Ridge by fall at 4 minutes. Wells finished in second, going 3-1, and finished the season with a  22-9 record. 

Eva Willis (185, 21-6) also went 3-1, winning her first round over the No. 2 seeded wrestler Josslyn Blair (38-5) of Jerome by a 9-3 decision. In the quarterfinals, Willis defeated Caroline Huml of Vallivue by fall and then Quisea Robinson of Minico by a 5-4 decision in the semis. 

Willis fell to the eventual state champion, Shuana Anderson of Thunder Ridge in the finals, at 22 seconds. Willis weighs 170 pounds but wrestles at 185.

Also placing was junior Sofia Brown (132) in fifth and Savannah Rickter (152) finished sixth for the Badgers. 

Sofia Brown (132) fell in the first round to eventual champion, Courtney Hunt of American Falls by fall. Brown then battled it out in the consolation bracket going 3-1, until losing to Hallie Esmiol of Centenail by a 7-5 decision. In the fifth-place match, Brown faced Lake City’s No.1 seed Madi Cook, the District I-II champion, winning by fall at 4:08. 

Savannah Rickter (152) won her first two matches by fall early on but fell to Hayley McNeal of Potlatch in the semi-finals. Rickter beat out McNeal the week before for the District I-II championship. Rickter then entered the consolation bracket and fell in the next two matches, earning sixth place. 

Neveah Therrien (107, 30-4) fell to Glenns Ferry's Vanessa Ortiz by a 6-5 decision in the quarterfinals. Therrien then entered the consolation bracket and fell to Ridgevue's Alliyah Green (19-23). Therrien was the 107 defending state champion but did not place at this year’s state championship. 

Hallie Hartman (285) lost her first-round match and went 0-2, finishing the season with a 15-16 record.
