PREP Basketball: Badgers sweep Knights

BOYS

PLUMMER — The Badgers (8-3) defeated the 1A-D1 Lakeside Knights (6-1) with an explosive fourth quarter, scoring 31 of their 73 points. 

Bonners Ferry went into halftime of the boys basketball game with a 27-26 lead over the Knights. Back on the court, the Badgers were hot from the three-point line, scoring three of the team’s nine three-pointers. Unfortunately, the Knights also came back strong from halftime, with Blaze Callahan scoring six points and Tyson Charley sinking seven of his 16 points in the third quarter. 

Lakeside led at the beginning of the fourth with 44-42, having outscored the Badgers in the third. 

The Badgers went on to score 31 points in the fourth, shooting 100% at the free throw line making 16. The Badgers shot 22 of 24 at the free-throw line. The Badgers won 73-65. 

Thomas Bateman led Bonners Ferry with 22 points, scoring 11 in the fourth. Asher Williams notched 20 points, including shooting eight for eight at the free-throw line in the final quarter. 

As of Jan. 9, Badger boys basketball leads the 3A Intermountain League with an 8-3 record over Timberlake (4-8). 

Top leaders in the rest of 3A boys basketball. 

3A Mountain Rivers Conference Teton is leading at 8-4, with defending state champion Sugar Salem (5-6) in second.

In the 3A Sawtooth Central Idaho Conference Kimberly leads 9-1. 

3A Snake River Valley Conference McCall-Donnelly sits at 8-1. 

The 3A South East Idaho Conference leaders include Snake River (10-2) and American Falls (9-3).

GIRLS

Badgers girls (9-3) defeated Lakeside (Plummer) on Jan. 6 and went 2-0 at the West Valley Holiday tournament in December. 

Bonners Ferry won 70-59, full stats were not available. 

In a coaching poll by IdahoSports.com, Bonners Ferry (9-3) is not ranked in the top five of 3A, however, IML opponent Timberlake (9-3) was ranked second by coaches with the same record. As of this year, MaxPreps.com sets the Idaho ranking, and not reporting scores or delaying to report scores can affect rankings. Last season, volleyball team rankings across Idaho were affected based on reporting and not reporting tournament games. 


West Valley Holiday Classic

Newport 15,  BF 53. 

Dec. 28. 

SPOKANE — Badger girls basketball jumped to lead the Newport Grizzlies the entire game at the West Valley Holiday Basketball Tournament on Dec. 28. 

Senior Markynn Pluid scored nine points and 16 rebounds for the Badgers. Taren Bateman led Bonners Ferry with 19 points and five steals. Asha Abubakari also scored 12 points and earned seven rebounds. 

The Badgers finished the tournament 2-0. 

Newport: 5 5 5 0 — 15

BF: 16 16 11 10 — 53

BF: Petesch 2, Kimball 6, Baisden 2, Pluid 9, Bateman 19, Mierke 3. Abubakari 12.

St. George 40, BF 61

Dec. 27 

SPOKANE—Badger girls basketball pulled away from the St. George Dragons in the second half, outscoring them by 15, on Dec. 27 at the West Valley Holiday tournament. 

At halftime, the Badgers led the Dragons by six points. The third quarter was close, as the Dragons found back going 14-16 against the Badgers. 

Bonners Ferry got in the grove and sank 20 points in the fourth to win, 61-40. 

Senior Asha Abubakari led Bonners Ferry with 21 points and seven rebounds. Markynn Pluid scored 12 points and Taren Bateman notched nine points, six steals and four assists. 

Bonners Ferry made 10 out of 13 free throws. 

St. George: 9 10 14 7 — 40

BF: 15 10 16 20 — 61

BF: Kimball 9, Baisden 4, Pluid 12, Bateman 9, Mierke 6, Abubakari 21.
