100 Years Ago

A fire of unknown origin which was discovered between three and four o'clock yesterday morning, caused damage to the extent of $10,000 to $12,000 when it destroyed the D.H. Chisholm sawmill at Copeland. Only a small amount of insurance was carried.

The day of the Fourth dawned bright and clear and by 10 o'clock when the Bonners Ferry celebration opened with street sports, the weather was almost uncomfortably warm. In the horse races immediately following the ball game of the Fourth, Walter Menes on a horse owned by Z.J. Foust, took first in the saddle horse event.

The county bridge over the Kootenai River here was threatened with destruction early Sunday morning and was only saved through prompt action on the part of a visiting showman, the night marshal, and a few local men who happened to be on the streets.

The popular Mint Club in Bonners Ferry has been closed for 30 days as the result of permitting a juvenile to drink, according to Jack Booth of the State Liquor office.

The Boundary County School District 101 was unable to decide at its annual meeting on Monday what to do with the old high school area. The board had considered giving the site to the county or the city for use as a public safety facility housing the city fire department, county sheriff, city police, jail and a small courtroom. But residents of the area are opposed to most of these suggestions.

Boundary County Sheriff's Office reminds residents who received new addresses to display them on homes or at the end of driveways.

GROW, a non-profit that owns and maintains several local gardens, has completed and opened its latest garden in Bonners Ferry.

Genny Hoyle of Bonners Ferry placed 36th in the women's 35-39 age group for the 2009 Ironman in Coeur d'Alene.
