Free avian flu testing at fairgrounds
BONNERS FERRY — In preparation for the upcoming fair, free Avian flu testing for birds is being held at the Boundary County Fairgrounds’ indoor arena on July 24 from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. The testing is not limited to fair entrants, anyone who would like to have their bird tested is welcome, excluding waterfowl.
All birds who are entered into the fair must be tested for Avian flu to protect other birds as well as humans. Avian flu is highly contagious and is most often fatal to the birds that catch it, but not as much to humans.
The testing usually runs $70, so this opportunity for free testing being open to the public is the perfect time to get birds cleared.
The testing is arranged through the University of Idaho Extension office. There are two veterinarians who travel up through the state who administer the test free of charge to any county who wishes to have it done.
Boundary County does not allow the entrance of any waterfowl in the fair as they can be carriers of Avian flu- passing it on to other non-aquatic birds where it can spread very quickly.
