Initiative calls to support local businesses Friday

| June 5, 2024 1:00 AM

The Support Local Gems initiative is an all-day celebration of Idaho’s small businesses. On Friday, June 7, Idahoans are encouraged to support small businesses in our communities.

Small businesses are a huge part of what makes Idaho so special, Sen. James Risch, R-Idaho, said in a press release announcing this year’s program.

“They are the backbone of our economy; they employ our friends and neighbors; they showcase our state’s creativity and values; they provide invaluable goods and services; and they epitomize what makes the Gem State great,” Risch said.

Started in 2020 by Risch and the Idaho Department of Commerce, Support Local Gems shines light on Idaho’s small businesses — and on ways for residents to show their support. Support from everyone — from chambers of commerce to community residents — is what makes the program a success, Risch said.

“This Friday, June 7,  show your love for Idaho’s small businesses,” Risch said. “But don’t stop there. Every day is a good day to Support Local Gems. Your support helps to preserve the jobs and local character that make Idaho’s communities vibrant.”

While the state’s small businesses have done an “exceptional job” adapting to recent challenges, Risch said they still need support. Among the options are dining at local restaurants or ordering takeout, shopping at area stores or writing a positive review or just saying “thank you,” he added.

“Part of what makes Idaho so special are the small businesses that give our state its sense of the community,” said Risch. “This Friday, get out and #SupportLocalGems.”
