Municipal pool opens for 90th season

BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry municipal pool opened its 90th season with a splash on Sunday, June 9.

The pool, located at Washington and Helena streets, is free to use and offers swim lessons, and water fitness classes.

“It is vital to get kids swimming lessons before they adventure out to hazardous waters, such as streams, creeks, lakes and the Kootenai River,” said David Hatch, pool manager.

This year is the pools’ 90th anniversary, as it first opened in 1934.

“Remarkable that a small town like Bonners had the people in 1934 to build a pool,” Hatch said. “Pools were rare back then and it's a wonderful resource for the community."

This year the pool has added a water instructor for classes twice a week. All payments for swim lessons and water classes should be made at City Hall.

Swimming lessons are again offered for ages 4 and up and all abilities. Swimming lessons are $55 for all residents; however, at this time all lesson spots have been filled.

Hatch said there is a chance there will be a fifth round of classes added at the end of the summer. Additionally, he hopes to have a “mommy and me” class for moms and young kids at the end of the summer.

A water fitness class will be offered in two sessions this summer, the first June 24 to July 25 and the second, July 29 to Aug. 28. The sessions cost $55 and sign-up sheets can be found at City Hall.

Special needs swimming lessons are July 8-19 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Those interested should check availability with City Hall.

The pool is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. On Saturday and Sundays, the pool is open from noon to 6:30 p.m.
