An open letter on marriage and sexuality

| June 20, 2024 1:00 AM

God immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary sexes together reflect the image of God. Rejecting one’s biological sex repudiates the Creator’s sovereignty. (Genesis 1:26-27.)

“Marriage” is the monogamous covenantal union of one man and one woman for life (Genesis 2:18-25), reflecting Christ’s relationship with His Church (Ephesians 5:21-33). Sexual intimacy is only for a man and woman married to each other (Hebrews 13:4).

All sexual immorality is an abomination to God and destructive to society. (Genesis 19:4-11 [cf. Jude 7]; Exodus 20:14; Leviticus 18:6-23; Romans 1:24-28; 1 Corinthians 6:9-18; Galatians 5:16-21; James 4:1-4)

Everyone must be shown respectful compassion (Mark 12:28-31; Luke 6:31). Love for others, however, also includes exposing “the unfruitful works of darkness” and “correct[ing] … opponents with gentleness,” calling rebels to repentance from sin and faith in the finished, saving work of the Lord Jesus on the Cross (Ephesians 4:29; 5:11; Jude 22-23; 2 Timothy 2:23-26). God promises redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ, “who loved us and gave himself up for us” (Ephesians 5:2; Acts 3:19-21; Romans 10:9-10; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11).
