100 Years Ago

Mrs. L.L. Kades found gold nuggets to the value of 60 cents in the craw of a Rhode Island Red hen she killed Monday. The nuggets, which were worn smooth and round, were subjected to several tests by W.E. Drake, of Howe's Jewelry Store, to make sure they were actually gold.

T. S. Kerr, Superintendent of the Schools of Independent District No. 4 for the past six years, who recently tendered his resignation to take effect at the end of the term, has accepted the associate professorship of economics and sociology, in the School of Business Administration, University of Idaho.

The Cynide Gold Mining Company's sawmill in the Buckhorn district burned to the ground early yesterday morning with an uninsured loss of about $4,000.  Banked fire and creosote in the chimney are given as the cause.

A long-sought new restorium for the county's elderly has taken its first step towards reality. The plans call for 14,000 square feet total area - 12,400 square feet of ground floor space plus 1,600 in a basement that would house a public health nurse facility.

The building located in the northeast section of downtown Bonners Ferry which houses Kruegel's Men's Store, the liquor store, Sportsman Club, Warranty Appliance, Irwin's and 11 apartments was purchased effective May 1 by Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Kelson and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Chubb.

"The Boundary County Historical Society has started a drive to raise funds for the creation of a County Historical Museum. For the first time in many years, Boundary County has an excellent opportunity to have a museum for preserving and displaying its historical past. Space within the basement of the new library building is available for this purpose." Howard Kent

As of Monday, a record 34 people had pre-registered for the 6th Annual Canine Caper on Saturday, May 9, at Boundary County Fairgrounds.

Bonners Ferry boys golf team won the Idaho 3A District I-II tournament Tuesday at the Ranch Club in Priest River. Winning qualified Badgers Derrick Alt, Derek Dietz, Carey Reynolds, Aaron Moe and Dillon Dietz for the state tournament for a third year in a row.

Bonners Ferry log hauler Don Wells got good news last week. He will return to the woods as the annual spring thaw comes to an end. He can thank places like Idaho Forest Group and Fodge Pulp, which continue to buy logs for their local mills, and private landowner Forest Capital.
