North Idaho Classical Academy announces new 2026 opening date
BONNERS FERRY — After careful consideration, North Idaho Classical Academy (NICA) is moving its opening date to August 2026.
Although the tuition-free charter school’s original plan was to open in 2025, challenges in obtaining a timely approval for the property under consideration necessitated this change.
Despite the delay, NICA remains optimistic and steadfast in its commitment to its mission. The school is actively in discussions to secure a facility and is seeking approval to open kindergarten through seventh grade in 2026.
“While we share the community’s disappointment in our delayed opening, this new timeline allows us to secure a good facility and thoughtfully prepare for a successful launch in 2026,” said Dr. Jacob Francom, Founding Principal of North Idaho Classical Academy.
Over the next year and a half, NICA will ensure that its facilities and programs are fully prepared to meet the high standards expected by students, families, and the community. NICA will continue to engage through updates, events, and opportunities to be involved in shaping the future of NICA.
NICA is receiving startup counsel and training from the Hillsdale College K-12 Education Office, and support from Blumm, a Boise-based charter school funding organization.
Next milestones for NICA include:
1. Finalize Purchase – Completion of the acquisition of the property.
2. Begin Remodel and Construction – Summer 2025 marks the start of renovations and construction to transform the property into a vibrant school campus.
3. Open Student Lottery – The lottery for student enrollment will open on November 1, 2025, and close on March 1, 2026. The lottery process will ensure a fair selection of students for the inaugural year.
4. Hire Staff – Recruitment of teaching and support staff will continue throughout the process, ensuring a strong team is in place for the 2026-2027 school year.
5. Complete Construction – Construction will be finalized by summer 2026.
6. Doors Open – The academy will welcome its first students in August 2026.
