PREP WRESTLING: Dodd grapples to silver, Brown to bronze at State Championship meet

BOYS

POCATELLO — Bonners Ferry High sophomore Taylor Dodd capped off a terrific sophomore season this past Friday and Saturday at the 4A State Championship, held at Idaho State University's ICCU Dome, grabbing a silver medal in the heavyweight division.

Dodd, who finished the season with a record of 29-8, won his opener with a pin in 24 seconds, by a 5-2 decision in the quarterfinals, and by a third-period pin in the semifinals to punch his ticket to the title match. Dodd, who finished fourth in the heavyweight division as a freshman at least year's state championship, went up against Gabe Finley of Buhl, who was 54-1 on the season entering the match. Dodd fought hard, but Finley used a 9-2 third-period scoring advantage to register a 19-3 technical fall victory.

Stryder Liermann (138), Gaige Johnson (165) and Jacob Solt (190) all picked up two wins each for the Badgers, which placed 14th out of 18 scoring teams.

GIRLS

POCATELLO — Bonners Ferry High's lone senior Sofia Brown finished up her season with a bronze medal in the 138-pound weight class at the All-Class State Championship held this past Friday and Saturday at Idaho State University's ICCU Dome.

Brown, who placed fifth at 132 pounds at least year's state championship and won five different tournaments and districts this year, won four of her five matches to finish off the season with a 35-5 record. She won her first two matchups by pin, and after falling in the semifinals, won her first consolation match by pin to clinch the third-place match. It was there where she went up against Courtney Hunt of American Falls; Brown scored three points in each period to post a 9-5 win by decision.

Nevaeh Therrien was also impressive, placing fifth in their 107-pound weight class. The sophomore, who did not place at last year's state championship, won four out of her six matches and finished the season with an overall record of 41-8. After winning her opener by pin, she fell in the quarterfinals, but bounced back with two wins on the backside — one by a 20-6 major decision and the other by pin. In the consolation semis, Therrien fell again in a close match settled by a 6-1 decision, but used that loss to fuel her to a win by pin in the fifth-place match.

Brown and Therrien combined for 36 points, good enough for a tied for 14th-place finish with Rigby out of 74 teams that were represented.
