BCMS invites community to judge career presentations and March madness doors
Boundary County Middle School officials are inviting community members and Boundary County School District 101 employees to help evaluate career presentations and the annual March Madness door competition on Wednesday, March 19.
BCMS eighth graders have spent several weeks identifying their strengths and exploring possible careers which complement and support these strengths. The final presentations are the last step of the lengthy project.
Those who come out to evaluate the student’s presentations are not only helping them celebrate all they have learned throughout this unit, but they are also supporting them as they develop skills to prepare for a larger senior project when they are in high school.
Attendees will see five-minute multimedia presentations from students, who present everything from who they are to their experiences during a recent two-hour job shadow.
Students will also talk about how potential careers align with their strengths, the pros and cons of different career paths, and what steps they need to take to achieve their goals.
"Even if you can only make it for part of the day, I can easily put you in for one class period,” Kelly Hinthorn, eighth grade language arts teacher, said of the scheduled. “The majority of the presentations will take place during periods 1- 6. There will be few presentations during seventh period, and none during Badger time, lunch or flex. Thank you so much for considering helping out with this project.”
The event starts at 8 a.m. with a welcome and overview. First period begins at 8:30 a.m., second period at 9:30 a.m., third period at 10:30 a.m., fourth period and lunch at 11:25 a.m., fifth period at 1:05 p.m. and sixth period at 2:05 p.m. There will be no presentations during lunch.
Those who would like to participate are asked to contact Hinthorn by calling the school at 208-267-5852 or on her cellphone at 208-290-1506. She can also be reached by email at kelly.hinthorn@mail.bcsd101.com.
The same day, the annual March Madness door competition is taking place. The community is invited to judge 14 different flex classes. Each class will be assigned a college and will decorate the door and locker area according to a provided rubric.
This year, the judging process has been modified from previous years and each judge will be responsible for judging one grade level only. Organizers have made this change in hopes that this will streamline the process and allow each judge to focus on four to five doors, rather than all 14. In addition, only eighth graders will be doing the live tours after school while the sixth and seventh graders will only have decorations to be judged.
The judging will begin after school on Wednesday, March 19, beginning at 4:15 p.m. and concluding at about 5:15 p.m. Organizers request to arrive at 4 p.m. to receive instructions.
