New educational resource available at the Boundary County Library

Thanks to a generous grant from the Dorothy Louise Kyler Foundation the Boundary County Library was able to purchase a new collection of Decodable Readers produced by the Beanstalk Books Company.

Beanstalk Books specializes in decodable readers and they publish one of the world’s largest collections of decodables. A decodable reader is a text used in beginning reading instruction. It is a story that is controlled based on the phonics skills taught to students up to that point. The company was founded by children’s author and co-founder of Junior Learning, Anna Kirschberg.

Kirschberg has used her expertise in phonics-based instruction to develop purely decodable reading books around a structured phonics sequence, for young children and older, struggling readers.

According to the Beanstalk Books website, Beanstalk Books decodable readers are underpinned by the principles of the science of reading and supports the worldwide movement of evidence-based reading instruction.

Boundary County Library officials said they have spoken to homeschooling parents and heard firsthand the difference the books have made in their children’s reading ability.

“Amazing and quick results,” Lynn Silva, BCL director said of the feedback the library received on the collection’s addition. “The library has always tried to provide a wide range of educational resources for the community. We are proud to offer this proven resource for all the early readers and struggling readers of our community and the people who teach them.”

The new collection includes about 400 books, in sets of 12 to borrow and use to help children learn to read, Silva said.
