In this panoramic photo, fresh snow can be seen filling a portion of the Kootenai River after heavy snowfalls this week. City of Bonners Ferry Mayor David Sims said the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality gave the city permission to dump excess snow into the river because the city’s regular snow storage located off of Arizona Street reached capacity. About 200 loads of snow has been dumped into the river since Sunday. Sims said only fresh snow retreived from the downtown area that is free of salt and oil residue is disposed of in the river.
“We would like to thank residents for their patience as we remove the excess snow from the downtown area,” Sims said.
Sims said the city has not requested assistance from the state, but may have to consider that if the coming snow and rain cause flooding.
