The body of the bald-faced hornet is black in color, and its face is marked with white. Bald-faced hornets are larger than most yellow jackets and have powerful stings.

Bald-faced hornets and their complex paper nests
Recently I was traveling mid-morning along the Kootenai River when suddenly my attention was captured by the sun’s reflection on a gray shiny dome the size of a volleyball hanging in a riverside tree.
