Summer reading program a hit with Bonners Ferry kids
Where can you find 50+ kids on Thursdays in July? Why, at the Valley View Summer Reading program! This year’s program is starting strong with 47 kids attending our first session, and 60 kids on July 6. With teachers and support staff volunteering their time, we have opened our library. Kids of any age are welcome, and everyone has lunch, checks out books, plays chess, listens to a story read by our downtown librarians, and makes a craft.

Summer has begun for Boundary County Middle School!
Summer is now upon us here at BCMS. We have had a great time this year and ended with lots of activities and awards. Let’s take some time to recognize the many great students, programs, and activities we ended with at BCMS.

Being in the proud profession of teaching and learning for 40 years now, I will start with a multiple choice question, “What did I learn this year?” Select one: A) Learning never stops, B) Communication is key, C) Mistakes are educational, D) Respect and trust are earned, or E) All of the above. Easy enough question even though the answers are sometimes hard to come by! Overall, we had a wonderful school year and thanks to all the answers listed above, this will continue into 2017-2018 and beyond. As I will always do, let’s base our progress on safe, civil and productive actions.
Bonners Ferry FFA places at state
MOSCOW — On June 6, the Bonners Ferry FFA Chapter traveled to Moscow, Idaho to compete in the State CDEs. The chapter left right after school on Tuesday, June 6, so all of the students going on the trip were required to take two of their finals early. Once the vans reached Moscow, the chapter was checked into the hotel and the members had some free time before curfew.

Boundary County 4-H Beef program has successful spring
Members of the Boundary County 4-H Beef program have been busy this spring. Four began showing off their animals March 31 in Moses Lake at the North Central Washington Junior Livestock Show. Nine ventured to the Spokane Jr. Livestock Show May 2-7 to show their heifers, prospect steers and five sold market steers.
Wild Horse Trail DAR lists essay contest winners
Each year, Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors an American History essay contest for grades 5 through 8. A different essay topic is selected each year.
Bull Bash event delights crowd
BONNERS FERRY — The Kootenai River Days Selkirk Saddle Club Bull Bash came to the Boundary County Fairgrounds on July 8, delighting the audience for the second time this year.

Kootenai River Run brings the fun, raises funds for scholarships
BONNERS FERRY — “Running is such a great activity because you just need a good pair of shoes... and go,” said Karen Pflasterer. She and her husband, John Pflasterer, along with their dog, Cooper, completed the 5K 2017 Kootenai River Run on Saturday, July 1.

Colorful runners have a blast
BONNERS FERRY — On June 17, the second annual Color Blast Run took place, put on by the Bonners Ferry High School Volleyball Team and Coach Kendra Maas. Each station was sponsored by a local business that showered the runners in colored chalk as they passed.
