Improving veterans' access to care
åIdaho veterans and their family members have made it clear that the Veterans Choice Program (Choice program), created to make it easier for veterans to get health care, does not work for Idahoans. To address concerns raised by Idaho veterans, I introduced the Improving Veterans Care in the Community Act of 2016, S. 3401, to make it easier for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to send veterans into their local communities for health care, to make it easier for veterans to access this community health care and to make it easier for veterans to access the services they need.

MUSKRATS: Rodents that are excellent swimmers
On a cloudy morning beside a grassy canal on the Kootenai Wildlife Refuge parallel to the Kootenai River I observed a muskrat busily swimming and inspecting the vegetation. In spite of the fact he noticed me I managed to get a few photos before he silently disappeared under the water. Although primarily nocturnal, this squeaky-voiced rodent tends to be a sociable animal and sometimes active by day.

Painted turtles bask in Boundary County sun
On a trip around the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge this past week-end I noticed a number of turtles basking in the sun on a log in a pond of water beside a gravel road. On a closer look I noticed the turtles were painted turtles. The Painted Turtle is the only species of turtle that occurs naturally in Idaho so identifying them is simple. Although, due to escaped pets and introduced species, one must become familiar with the general characteristics of Painted Turtles to avoid confusing them with such turtles a Box Turtles, and Red-eared Sliders (both common pet species).
